Volunteer Tour

  • Itinerary

This special tour was originally created for a friend of Nanda Kulu, owner of Mountain Sisters and founder of the Mitrata-Nepal home for children. The trip was such a success that we've decided to offer it as an option to our clients. The adventure entails a wide variety of sights and activities that will be sure to please - tour the historical sites around Kathmandu valley, including a night in scenic Nagarkot, travel to Chitwan for a wildlife safari and jungle adventure, onward to Pokhara for a taste of heavenly beauty, and depart for a moderate but amazingly scenic trek to Ghorepani and Poon hill. Add a mountain flight at your preference for some high-flying adventure. Before or after your journey, spend as many or few days as you'd like volunteering at the Mitrata-Nepal children's home in Kathmandu. This package will no doubt fill your memory cards with photographs and your heart with memories.

Days 1 and 2: Welcome to Kathmandu
Namaste and welcome to our beautiful country! You will be received at the airport by representatives from Mountain Sisters and SLC level students from the Mitrata-Nepal children's home and transferred to your hotel. After getting situated, join us for a guided tour of any of the treasured spots Kathmandu is renowned for - soak in the museum-like ambience of Kiritipur and try traditional Newari cuisine on a terrace overlooking the valley, or witness the amazing skill of traditional woodcarvers in Bugamati. Visit Nepal's largest stupa at Boudanath, take a rickshaw ride through historical Durbar Square to see the living Goddess, climb the steps to Swayambu temple - it's all up to you which of Kathmandu valley's many cultural gems you'd like to explore. Our Kathmandu sightseeing will end with a short evening drive to Nagarkot.

Day 3: Nagarkot

Located just 32km east of Kathmandu. Nagarkot is famous for it's spectacular mountain views. After several days sightseeing in the city bustle, you will find welcome relief in the fresh air and forested hillsides surrounding Nagarkot. We arrive in the evening in time for an incredible sunset - the vista from Nagarkot includes views of many himalayan peaks including Langtang, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and even Mt. Everest on the clearest days. Enjoy dinner and resort accomodations, and an equally stunning sunrise in the morning. After breakfast we depart by bus or private van to Chitwan.

Days 4 - 7: Chitwan
We journey to the subtropical lowlands of central nepal, the Terai, home to the bengal tiger and Nepal's protected rhinoceros and elephant populations. Spend three days exploring Chitwan National Park, a birdwatcher's paradise, home to over 700 species of wildlife and an incredible range of flora and fauna. Take an elephant or jeep safari, guided jungle walk, or river rafting tour. On our last afternoon we depart by bus or private van to Pokhara.

Days 8 and 9: Pokhara

We arrive in Pokhara, Nepal's second largest city and most popular of tourist destinations. Situated just south of the Annapurna range, Pokhara is famous for amazing views of the 8,000 meter Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Manaslu peaks, mirrored in the heavenly reflection of Phewa Lake at the city's southern end. Spend the next two days visiting Davis Falls, a waterfall which tumbles from a natural tunnel, paddle a boat and relax around the lake, take a bicycle ride or do some cave exploring. Enjoy an evening of shopping and dining and prepare for your trek to Ghorepani!

Days 10 - 16: Ghorepani Trek
The highlight of this moderate but very rewarding trek is no doubt the unforgettable sunrise viewed from the summit of Poon hill. The vista from Poon hill - a virtual sea of snowy peaks spanning from Dhaulagiri to Annapurna - could well be considered the finest panoramic mountain view on the planet. Enjoy a countryside flush with alpine and rhododendron forests, home to traditional Gurung and Magar settlements, beneath a majestic himalayan horizon dominated by the commanding peak of Machapuchare (fishtail).
